Cornerstone (Peoples Church History)

For nearly 100 years, Peoples Church has been shaped by courageous faith, sacrificial generosity, and a deep commitment to serving Hamilton with the love of Jesus. The laying of each cornerstone in our history has marked more than the start of a new building—it has signaled the start of a new season of ministry and a renewed declaration that Jesus Christ is our true cornerstone.

Today, as we celebrate the cornerstone of The Greater Project, we step into a new chapter built on everything God has done through this church since 1927.

Our Humble Beginning (1927–1947)

Peoples Church began in 1927 when Reverend and Mrs. Blair arrived in Hamilton to serve a small congregation of 40 people. They gathered in a modest second-floor hall above a shoe store—a simple beginning rooted in sincere faith.

As the church grew, so did the vision.

In 1929, Central Gospel Tabernacle was constructed at King William Street and West Avenue. Over the next two decades, the church expanded several times, and in 1947, leaders laid a new cornerstone to mark the fourth major expansion. It represented growth, unity, and a declaration that God was moving among His people.

A Season of Loss—and Remarkable Resilience (1970–1971)

On September 13, 1970, a devastating arson fire destroyed the church building. What could have ended our story instead revealed the strength of our church family.

With faith and determination, the congregation purchased four acres of land at 510 Mohawk Road West. Only one year later, in September 1971, a new cornerstone was laid—and Peoples Church was born. That stone symbolized hope, renewal, and the belief that God still had work to do through His people.

From that new beginning came new ministries and new life:

  • A growing bus ministry
  • A daycare serving families
  • Thriving kids and youth programs
  • Seniors ministries and community outreach
  • A free sports program impacting families citywide

God continued to grow the church—so much so that once again, space became limited.

Introducing The Greater Project: Creating Space for What God Will Do Next

Today, Peoples Church enters another significant moment in its history with the cornerstone of The Greater Project, a large-scale church expansion designed to create more space for connection, family, accessibility, and the next generation.

This project includes:

A bright, family-friendly playplace and café

A welcoming space where families can gather throughout the week and build community.

A sensory room for children with disabilities

Designed to offer a calm, supportive environment for kids who need a quiet, flexible space.

A second-level lobby and gathering space

A spacious area built for community, conversation, and connection before and after services.

An elevator and increased accessibility

Ensuring every person—at every stage of life—can fully participate in church life.

More washrooms and improved traffic flow

Practical updates that make a big difference for families and weekend services.

A brand-new five-section balcony

Creating room for everyone who calls Peoples Church home—and those we’ll welcome next.

These additions are more than construction. They are capacity for greater ministry, greater relationships, and greater impact.

From 1927 to Today: A Story Built on Faith

Every cornerstone in our history has marked a defining moment:

  • 1927: A humble beginning
  • 1947: A season of expansion
  • 1971: A new church, a new name, a new mission
  • 2025: A future shaped by faith and vision

Through every season, God has been faithful.

Through every challenge, our church has responded with sacrifice, resilience, and unity.

And through every milestone, our mission has remained unchanged: to reach our community with the love of Jesus.

This Is Our Legacy. This Is Our Moment. This Is the Greater Project.

As we celebrate this new cornerstone, we look ahead with gratitude and expectation. The same God who brought us through every chapter of our story is leading us into an even greater future.

This is our story.

This is our legacy.

And this is only the beginning of what God will do next.
